Audio Help Please.

Hi All, My daughter has been caught up in the fashion for vinyl records. I promised her that, next time I was up in the loft I would rescue an old turntable from a box up there and see if we could plug it into her little Sony mini hifi system.

Even a fule like me see it isn't going to work.

The Audio in port looks like a 3.5mm standard jack to me. The cable coming out of the Sherwood turntable looks like:

Is there some sort of adapted I could use? There are plenty of 3.5mm jack splitters but would any of them work? I know the sound quality will be compromised but it is to say I have tried!

There is what looks like a 3.5mm jack port with Audio in under it.

A phono to 3.5mm lead is what you'll require

Phono pre-amp as mort said, then a phono to 3.5 jack cable same as you'd use to plug your phone into a stereo, all std stuff. I've used a Nad pre-amp in the past, decent piece of kit.

You could always buy a decent second-hand amp with a phono stage on eBay. £40-60 would get you something that sounds really good to MP3-trained ears.

Damn! Modded just in time. What's the Mini HiFi Hugh?

Also, if that deck's been in the loft for a long time, I'd run it up first and make sure it's a) working and B) actually running at 33rpm which might be difficult until you've bought the gubbins.

Years ago we built a reasonable separates system. It has (has) Arcam amp, Denon tuner, Marantz CD, a tape deck that I forget, the Sherwood turntable and Mordant Short speakers.

One of the speakers developed a tinny sort of vibration and the CD player doesn't play any more. I will be able to test the turntable though!

@Hugh Manatee, if the turntable has been in the loft for some time, you may need to replace the rubber drive belt and put a few drops of oil in the main bearing. Anyway, that's what I found when I retrieved my Rega. You can find replacement belts on eBay.

If the table's playing up, spinning at odd speeds and making funny noises just put on Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and all that stuff will disappear in the melee.
