I think modern cars have "waterbased" paints as well, and i've heard they are softer than the old paints?
As i said, i always chuck the zafira through the car wash, as its nothing special and i can't be bothered
to make an effort on it. It has swirls already from too many car-wash cycles.

My little toy car gets the bucket job, poor thing is 24 years old now:

It is only the colour that is water based, the laquer on top is solvent based. Now most laquers today are high solids and and have anti scratch qualities built in, although sometime I wonder if they are working. Funny enough these scratches can appear quite easily but machine polishing them out is not as easy.

One of the things I teach/train here is paint rectification.
