Just seen this on the local news. Aviation fuel is being stolen and sold as heating oil! In addition advice is to ensure a good quality lock is used on heating oil tanks as theft of heating oil is huge. Who the heck to they sell it to?

Jet A1 is virtually the same formulation as diesel. I'm surprised no-one has cut into one of the pipelines running to Heathrow such as the one from Buncefield, Hemel Hempstead. It can't be too far underground. Bung a pop up filling station above, and start selling top grade diesel.

Quite a few people locally, are no longer using locks. There were some thefts recently, in which the thieves merely drill a large hole in the top of the plastic tanks, through which they could then siphon the oil. Very quick and easy to do - no need to even bother with the lock. Buying a new tank and having it fitted is more expensive than losing the oil.

Probably the best option would be to install a CCTV camera; fit a trellis around the tank and grow a large plant on it - in the hope that it can't be seen from the road.

Where there's a will....

Someone will nick it.

At least when they nick potentially dangerous stuff, there's a risk they'll injure themselves, I suppose.

The problem with securing oil tanks, IIRC, is that there are certain regulations regarding location and access so it isn't as simple as to hiding it or making it difficult to access.

When the price of fire wood rockets I will start to worry.
