1) What's your sure-fire way to test if they're ripe?
2) Can you leave them to ripen when they've been opened and you've found they're not ripe?
3) Has anyone taken one back to the shop when it's found to not be as ripe as claimed?

Bought one from Lidl yesterday. It passed my squeeze test, but, I've just opened it and it's solid inside. Been open for only 5 minutes and already starting to go brown. Grrr!

1) There isn't one. Prod the arse end and see if it gives a bit is about the best method, but it's not foolproof

I used to work in an avocado plantation, thus, I hate them. As said, hard to tell until you cut into them.

First rule of avocados.
Don’t spit the pip into an ashtray

For the sake of £1 I doubt many people bother taking them back. But my experience of Tesco and Sainsbury’s is that they would probably replace without any quibbles.

A "ripe" avocado is hard. We just prefer to eat them soft and they soften after harvest.

They can be "ripened" quicker in the company of bananas (in the fruit bowl or in a paper bag). Summert to do with banana gas or saink

Sounds like my first wife ^_^

Take the little pip out of the top of it, if it's green it's ready. If it's black it's gone over the edge..

Sainsburghs do some four pack that you keep in the fridge which are consistently easy to judge. I'm no fan of excess packaging but the loose ones you've no idea how many times they've been felt and bruised before you buy them.

I'm getting a very high failure rate from Aldi avos.

A friend had half a dozen Avo trees growing in his garden.

Dogs were obese and suffered from various physical ailments including diabetes. The vets had no explanation but continued to medicate and earn a fortune. My friend tried every light dog food, rice etc. Nothing helped.

Turned out the dogs were eating the wind fall Avos. WITHOUT Worcestershire Sauce. Uuurrrggghhh.

Get frozen avocado halves from Iceland (the shop) ... in the anticipation of eating one the next morning, plop it on a plate in your fridge, over it in clingfilm, and allow it to defrost overnight :okay:
