So after an enforced illness layoff of 2 months, I finally got back to the commute this week, only to find, as I feared, that I once again cannot make the climbs that I had previously had mastered: This makes the journey intolerable yet exciting as I will not now be beaten by these bl****y slopes. Funny how this biking lark becomes so entrenched in the psyche even after a layoff, and despite the lung burning thigh tearing pain---- I love being back in the saddle!!!xx(

Welcome back to the Birmingham commute. Which hills are giving you trouble? Maybe we can get a gathering of some local CC people and flatten them for you?

Welcome back, you'll soon be back to your old levels, i don't know the science behind it but i suspect there's a certain amount of background fitness that you never really lose.

Good luck !

Yes im back to it after 4 week lay off with new bike, gone from 21 gear 3 ring mtb to 2 ring compact 18.

Big difference on the hills can take so much more speed at the starts but significantly having to drop down more gears.

As everybody says should be back to decent performance in no time.
