Bad news and Good news

Got a bit of a fright this morning. an old guy in a Galaxy pulled out in front of me from being parked at the side of the road, causing me to slither and narrowly miss his rear bumper. For some reason I didn't unleash a barrage of abuse and merely shouted a very audible and clear "OI!"

The chappy pulled over, and rolled down his window, apologised most profusely and proceeded to get out and wipe all the remaining frost and mist off his windows and wing mirrors that had obscured his view beforehand.

At least he only drove 100m with an obscured view, hopefully he'll see the next cyclist!

That's the 'good news' bit in the title.
Everyone makes stupid mistakes, but few are wise enough to admit them.

I saw something similar a few weeks ago (when we had lots of snow). I guess there are a few things you can do to gently 'nudge' an erring motorist:

1. visibly stare at the car's number plate.
2. while doing (1), slowly but firmly (and audibly) recite out the reg. number. Repeat it 3 or 4 times as if you're trying to memorise it. Use the Police/Armed forces phonetic code ("alpha, bravo" etc).
3. Stop, fetch out a mobile phone (especially, from a breast pocket), and go through a show of keying something into it.
4. If you're wearing a yellow hi-viz jacket, stop, dismount and walk slowly but deliberately towards the car.
5. Carry something that looks like a camera (even if it isn't one)

All these might work.

People who diligently clear frost off their windows do forget sometimes about their mirrors and lights. Just as important.
