Just inspired me to finally write that letter of complaint to plod and local 'streetpride' about pavement parkers round here

I did not mention car ownership by the disabled/elderly, but for them to get about easily they will nearly all have access to a car via family. If you banned cars how would they get about? Wait for some form of state run service to take them somewhere? How often would that be?

Some people need to live in the real world and come up with real world solutions.

"Freedom to travel is a basic right for our citizens, curbing mobility is not an option". Transport Commissioner Siim KallasMarch 2011

Simply NOT the case... most disabled and elderly DO NOT have access to a car at all... they manage with public transport. This in itself proves the fallacy of the car is a neccessity myth!

However I fully agree with the last statement though it leads a little amendment...

"Freedom to travel is a basic right for our citizens, curbing mobility by parking your car on the pavement and damaging it is not an option"

First all I must say that I am a "bolshy get" and in the street where I live cars park on the footpath on both sides of the road. When I have an occassion to walk up the road I do so by walking in the middle of the road and cars have to slow down and squeeze past me. When the drivers tell me to get out of the way I tell them I have to walk here because there is no room on the footpath. Yes I have nearly come to blows on several accassions, but as I have said I am a bolshy get, oh I forgot to mention I also have a bad tmper with a short fuse.

The other question is why "we" should pay for the damage that is caused by the irresponsible actions of a few idiots.

ON my way to work it would be nice to use this "cyclepath" which has been damaged and is either slippery due to th egravel or the mudbath it becomes every time it rains.

Or alternatively why should an elderly or poor sighted person have to run the gauntlet of these 12 - 14 inch holes, and the broken down edge of the footpath?

The cost is some £234 million pounds per year in the UK simply for the repairs

That is 2% of the NHS deficit spent on unneccessary repairs

Of course if we were then to add the incidents and injuries caused by this vandalism to the NHS we would probably resolve the entire NHS deficit

Now finally add the compensation paid out and we could start to find that these people are probably costing enough to fund a lot of local services!
