I was once told, by the Housing Association I work with most, that if I ever won an award for their buildings that I'd spent too much money! Awards are nice marketing/ PR baubles but they are completely meaningless... the Stirling Prize being one of them.
James Stirling was a pompous, self-important person who's buildings often leaked or had operating flaws. The Florey Building had to be closed within a few years of opening because it was unuseable. His student residences had south facing rooms with full height glass walls.... in winter they froze, in summer they baked. Zaha Hadid spends so much of her clients' money I can't believe she gets away with it. A fire station she designed never operated because they couldn't get the fire engines into the building.
Norman Foster's buildings are grounded in common sense but they too cost a fortune.
Not bitter- just see award evenings as manipulation by marketing companies.... how about the National Roofing Association Awards, or the National Cleansing Operator of the Year Awards?
