I have favoured the Branston brand for a while now but in a fit of uncharacteristic health schtick I bought the low-salt, low-sugar range last time.

What a mistake; tasteless, pointless puritanism and as appealing as a piece of organic celery- if you're going to eat slutty foods make sure they're slutty enough.

I'll be back on the life-shortening varity next time. See you in the cardiac ward.

The Heinz variety are the same. Low sugar, salt = low taste. I have a low opinion of 'low' foods. low fat humus is another one, it's like liquified cardboard, besides what's so bad about humus. There should be a law against low fat sausage as well. Besides, you just wait for the next pice of bad science to come along and tell you low fat stuff is good for you, no bad for you, no good for you.........meanwhile, back in the real world....

Being a tight fisted northerner... i rarely buy designer beans. I find a nob of butter and blob of milk gives any bean a better sauce, and half a spponful of curry powder spices them up nicely

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Whole Earth baked beans. Far nicer than any of the big brands - the beans actually taste of beans rather than sugary tomatoey gloop.

Put some brown sauce on – makes any baked bean nicer.

As an aside, Mrs Dave has made home made baked beans a few times – they take a fair bit of doing, but they taste ruddy great – especially with home baked bread toasted.

I can bake any old beans and be healthy but I'm talking about self-indulgence here, like eating a packet of wine gums in one sitting, filling your face with a family pack of salted crisps.

Keep your fair trade life-lengthening beans and your 2% fat Total yoghurt.

Funny you should mention that as I also do that, but yesterday I questioned my own logic of the other sauce I usually add, tomato ketchup, what is the point of me doing that?

Never thought about it till yesterday.

I am happy with own brand beans, not the value/basic ones mind, but standard own brand. SWMBO will only eat branded beans and ketchup.

Almost everything with low salt / fat tastes worse. The fat and salt are there for a reason. I mistakenly bought low salt low fat pesto - what a waste of time, it was watery and tasted of nothing.

Makes sense to me - I also add a good dollop of tomato sauce. For me it vastly improves the flavour. Occasionally I add a couple of pinches of pepper - not to everyone's taste I admit.

Is that not the normal way to eat wine gums and crisps then?

As for baked beans ... a tablespoon (yes I do mean a tablespoon) of Marmite and a teaspoon of hot chilli powder does it for me. All on toast with about an inch of butter on it.
