oh my goodness!

He was an inspiration. Odd that the Telegraph obituary is the one referred to - he had to endure the obloquy of the Tory press when he was selcted for the (non) tour of South Africa.

I saw him walk the boundary of Worcester during a county match in which Graham Hick was smashing the ball for 4s and 6s. The wave of enthusiasm that rolled around with D'Oliviera must have had Hick wondering what he could do to be that popular.

Another gentleman cricketer from a bygone age departs for the pavillion in the sky.

A true gentleman and modest person.

He played in 44 Tests and averaged 40 with the bat - which is better than the likes of Nasser Hussain, Alan Lamb and Alec Stewart.

He was a solid and reliable player.

RIP, Basil.
