i've been watching the cycling coverage on bbc 2. I've never seen track racing before. Whats with the star wars extra going round on a red moped with post wrote on it lol. Thats was worth it just for that. I take it his purpose is to get them up to a certain speed?

That's the derny. What I want to know is, why does the rider rotate his legs? Is he helping the engine or just unable to prevent himself pedalling?

that's the keirin. it's origins are in japan, where it attracts heavy betting.

the rules are simple: the derny (the moped) goes around for a number of laps (increasing it's speed to around 50kph) and, while the riders may not overtake the derny), they may move up/down the line of riders.

once the derny moves off the track it's basically a free for all.

great fun to watch, and you get plenty of crashes too.

Smooth accel and decel seemingly. Good also in the event of motor seizure!

EDIT: it seems you've answered the question already!
