Neil Hannon of Divine Comedy was tackling Station to Station according to Radio 4 yesterday. Please tell me it went well.

Why oh why do promoters think they can get away with getting other singers to do classic material from truly great artists and do the material any justice. People remember the originals only too well.
Unless the singer sounds a bit like the original singer, which a rare thing, the cover version on stage will sound cheap and nasty.

Some of it was really outstanding. Some of it was dire, but overall a good effort. It was the thought that counted, and it was obviously done with a great deal of love and regard for David Bowie and his music.

If the material is any good it will stand up to any number of performance practices. As Radio 3 and the proms demonstrate all the time. If it didn't, and the artists and arrangers were capable, then the music must be duff.

Plenty of cover versions are pretty good, Hendricks doing "all around the watchtower", or Joe Cocker's "Help from my friends" . Even Elvis doing "Hound dog" isn't terrible
