On me hometown, Bath, today's max and min temperatures are given as +4 / +1 C. Yet, at 09:00 today the Beeb shows the temp as -1 C (verified by sticking my nose outdoors, yip, definately freezing).

Whats that all about then?

Forecasting isn't an exact science... as forecasters will no doubt tell you!

And obviously you'll get local variation and micro-climate. So I think of forecasts as trends rather than specific. That said, around here, even the 'trends' can seem way off. The real test is, as you say, sticking your nose out the door.

Before any long ride I scrutinise the sky, do my cod-forecasting and kid myself I now what's going to happen... and get it wrong!

It will be average temperature for the area. Some parts will be warmer than you others maybe a bit colder. Also depends where their thermometers are.

BBC said for this morning for me it would be -1 at 9:00 and when i look on my weather station it was -0.7. earlier it was -2.

Or as the famous saying goes. You can't predict the weather.

An earlier forecast I saw yesterday said 0°/-1° C last night but predicted a very sharp frost, I wondered what is that on about. A later one I am told said -3°C and I can now see why there was such a sharp frost on the higher hills in Sheffield. The weather station explains why, it dipped below 0 at about 7pm last night, much earlier than it usually would and only went above zero about 10am .

They've mucked up fairly significantly by over-estimating the last two nights. A forecast of +1 on Thursday night turned into a reality of -2 and the -1 which was forecast for last night was out by a similar amount.

I can't wait till Tuesday. They (the BBC) reckon it will be back up to 8°C here.

I quite often find there is a marked difference between the BBC online forecast and the local TV forecast. I used to use Metcheck but it never seems to work these days. I do like the way Metcheck lay their information out though.

Forecasting isn't an exact science...
not an exact science! Not an EXACT SCIENCE! IT'S A FARRAGO OF HALF-TRUTHS AND OUT AND OUT MISTAKES! Every single time I make the mistake of sending out a weather forecast prior to a ride the buggers get it wrong! DZ says 'it will be fine. Clear skies and light tailwinds'. Cue downpour and a gale in our faces! DZ says 'bring waterproofs or cancel if you prefer, because we're expecting 20mm of rain'. Cue not a drop of rain falling on the 55 people who turn up, while the 55 that cancel wake up the next morning and wonder what went wrong.....
