I was just reading about the nutritional value of beetroot. We've grown a fair amount of it this year because I like it, but I wanted to know what was in it. Turns out that, amongst other things, it increases the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood (a natural EPO?!).
But I reckon that must be a bit of an old wife's tale since otherwise we'd see TdF riders munching beetroot as they ascended the alp d'huez... it'd be a site worth seeing though. Beetroot stained chins etc.
Good stuff though is beetroot. Crammed with minerals and high in natural sugars. I love the stuff, especially juiced with an apple.
