This happened a few weeks ago, only now getting round to posting 
Scouting an obscure route for a Belles ride, both of us armed with a Garmin and a smart phone, we promptly get lost on the canal, could not find the right exit for the place we want to be.
Stopped a local cyclist, he offers to take us to our destination taking a short cut through a housing estate, then he leaves us.
All good, but how do we get back to the canal? And more important, how do we find our way to the destination again?
Two Belles confabulating, google map fired up ... how do you reverse a route on the Garmin???
It was getting near dinner time, we had enough: right, says me, we must head towards that big building on the hill, the canal is under it, near the railway, I remember.
Oh, look, a big purple flower bush, see, a red postbox. This road is full of potholes!
Route devised in the end was this:
leave canal at railway station, turn left under bridge, straight till second big purple bush, right but don't go under tunnel, left at red postbox into potholy road, left at blue road markings, up the hill to the Coop, left into main road, right at first traffic lights, right at "road not suitable for long vehicles".
