Realise this is pretty random as we all live in different parts of the world. Has anybody had some made, was it as you hoped serves its purpose etc.

We have a perfect 13 foot alcove but nothing off the shelf seems to look the part.

For our younger readers you may need to look up 13 foot!!.

"Made", rather than "had made". And yes, because I designed them myself I'd look pretty daft to say that they didn't serve the purpose or look right.

my parents used a local joiner. Much cheaper than a furniture company

It should be within the capabilities of a carpenter. We haven't had dining furniture made, but oak bookcases; one long wall of floor to ceiling built in units and two freestanding units along another wall for special books. It was quite expensive overall, but whatever we looked at was already made or flat packed and required us to compromise on size, style, construction material and matching.

Last month I 'recycled' a childs bookcase set into a desk. It saved having to take the bits of wood to the tip.

Careful! Carpenters work on building sites. You need a Joiner.
Depends what part of the country you are in Down south everyone is a carpenter and oooop north everyone is a joiner .
What you need is a carpenter and joiner ^_^
what part of the country is the OP in ?

I rent an odd shaped attic room in a shared house. I was looking for a while for bookshelves and whatnot to fit in the spaces available but nothing really did. Then we had a delivery at work and got stuck with a several pallets we couldn't get rid of and the penny dropped. I made my own, bit rough and ready, but made far better use of the space available than anything off the shelf could. Not suggesting the pallet route, but I'm sure any half descent proffessional - joiner/carpenter/cabinet maker  - could solve your problem. Get 1 of each in and get them to bid against each other for the job .
