I would like to buy a compact digital camera, not sure what to go for. I am used to my Digital SLR Canon 400D but this is too big to take on my cycle rides, I want something that will give good results ... buget around £150. Any suggestions?

I've had a couple of Casio Exilims and they've both been excellent. Having said which, don't take them on the beach - they're notoriously vulnerable to sand.

Would suggest a Panasonic Lumix. Amazing quality and feature loaded.

ditto - they produce excellent results - economical on batteries and have a very quick start up time - my only critism would be that they are suseptible to dust - but that is the same for any camera with a zoom and mechanical lens cover in that price range

I bought the Canon PowerShot A480 for £60 last year, good quallity camera, 10 Megapixel, and it fits in me back pocket. It takes good quallity still images and high quallity AVI movies. It has lots of usefull features. It has a 3.3 times optical zoom.

I seem to use that more than me DSLR.

When you narrow it down to three or four, go to www.dpreview.com and they will give you excellent hands on reviews on them. In your price band there are some great little cameras to be had. You are correct about DSLRs. I have two bodies, a great flash, half a dozen lenses, filters etc yet all my best cycling pics were taken with my little finepix z 30. because you have to have the camera with you to get the shot. Cycling and DSLRs dont easily go together .

I've just bought a Sony something-or-other (14mp) and it's bloomin marvellous. I got a compact for the size / simplicity reason as well. IMHO, don't get one that uses AA batteries as they don't last very long. Brain not switched on yet so can't remember the type of battery that mine's got, but it's like a mobile phone one...

I bought a Pansonic Lumix TZ8 for Christmas. Best camera I've owned after 2 Nikon Coolpix went t*ts up.

Battery life is very good and lots of features including idiot-proof automatic ( ).

It cost me £160 IIRC.

+1 to almost all of the above but, as a final test, I took my own memory card down to Jessops and ran a couple of pix and videos through the three which had made my final short-list.

One of them stood head and shoulders above the other two for both stills and video and it had a much better zoom range, so try and do the same trick to get your own images from each of the cameras to look at in your own time and space.

I had a Vivitar 5meg compact which I was happy with until a friend took some pictures of us at our wedding a couple of years ago using a Nikon Coolpix 6 meg compact. The difference in quality was astounding, and I bought a Coolpix a few days later for £60. This was a couple of years ago, and for £60 you get even more camera for your money now.
