I'm doing a bit of route planning for a ride next summer. Me and my brother are heading to France from Brentwood in Essex. The bit from his house to the Dartford crossing is fine.

However we plan to cross the Queen Elizabeth II bridge into Kent (after I discovered you can cross it with a bike although you have to get a lift across!)

Anyway we then plan to cycle to Dover from there. So what is the best way to go, keeping mileage down but also avoiding any really busy roads unless absolutely necessary?

Ping Flying Dodo He knows a very good London to Dover route

re Dartford crossing.
When you get to the north side crossing point you use the yellow telephone to call for transport.
A van turns up with a 3 bike Thule rack to take you and your bikes across.
If there are cyclists already waiting then you have to wait for the van to take them across then come back to pick you up.
Dependent on traffic it can take anything from 15 minutes to an hour to wait for the van.

I have done lots of cycling in Kent, and there are some excellent roads.

However my aim was coastal as opposed to direct.

My route basically followed NCN174 then round the coast to deal and NCN1 /2 to Dover.

The other rote I have used is again along the coast on NCN 174 to Whitstable, then Crab and WInkle line into Canterbury. There is a local route (16) that heads down to Dover
