What would be the best rock supergroup composed of musicians who died under 40? Preferably they will have died from a drug overdose, but cumulative assaults on the liver, air accidents, shooting incidents and suicides are all acceptable.

Yup. But thankfully made it well past 40. Ignoring the rock criteria, the supergroup is obvious:

Clifford Brown, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Bud Powell (bit of licence - he made about 42), Paul Chambers. Drummers are a problem - they seem to live forever. Might have to make do with Chick Webb..
