Bike snobs need not apply.

My main bike is a road bike which I love. I also have a folder I occasionally use but neither are suited to off road riding.

I'm looking for a mountain bike to add to my collection. It's mainly going to be used to ride on gravel paths and maybe down some hills but nothing serious. Doesn't need to have suspension, disc brakes, etc. Just looking for something that will scratch that occasional itch to go off road without breaking the bank.

I know you can spend a lot on these bikes but my budget is quite low and I'm looking for the best I can at this price range.

At the moment I'm looking at a B'TWIN 340 which is £159.99 or the B'TWN ROCK Rider 300 for £119.99

Second hand may be a good option for you, I got an almost new Giant Revel 0 in February for £200.

I'm not really up on MTBs but the 340 looks like there is a fair bit of bike there for the money. I'd buy it if I was looking for one.

I did find my MTB (Spesh Hardrock) for £150 on Gumtree. Chap had the original receipt and everything. If you know what you are looking for, 2nd hand can be the way to go.

Here`s one with full suspension and disc breaks for £138 http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3323083.htm#pdpFullProductInformation

I wouldnt buy it personally but it looks quite nice. Read the reviews

I`d look at getting one second hand too. A lad at work picked up a 2008 Specialized Hardrock for £40 off Facebook.

Thanks Lilliburlero.

At my budget I'm happy to forgo disc brakes and suspension as they're probably not going to be any good.

Rather get something which covers the basics better.

+1 on the second hand idea. I think you'll get far more for your money.

Thanks for the advice. I got a cheapo nasty second hand one in the end.

It's a horrible bike but will do for me. I'm not going down any mountains. It's just something to ride on gravel paths and also to take out in the rain and not have to worry about cleaning it afterwards.

I can already say oh second hand with my limited experience.

I have a £120 Apollo Feud and it's OK for what I want but if I knew what I know now I wish I had spent more. However as I am overweight and want to get fitter before investing in a better bike it's been a good investment already ridden 30+ miles in the last week

I already have a "good" bike which is my road bike.

Just looking for something cheap to use on gravel paths and the odd occassion I want to cycle in the rain and not have to worry about cleaning my nice bike.

Then I'd probably get the one I have - it was down to £99 online, if your not that bothered about what you get
