Hi ya

I am looking into purchasing a new bike but I am worried about it getting stolen. I would be gutted if my old banger got pinched, but if I am investing some hard earned cash into a nice shiny new bike, I want to discourage would-be tea-leaves, from nicking it!

Currently I am using an old Halfords (apologies) d-lock. It is also useful if the lock can be secured on the bike when being ridden as I hate having to fish it out of a bag. My d-lock currently sits quite nicely around the seat post and rests on the pannier rack without rattling or moving about.

Many thanks in advance for your toughts an opinons

After my original bike was nicked I looked into this, advice from the police was to not leave the bike anywhere. As I don't have a choice I went with option 2 which was use a variety of types. Originally I followed the sold secure ratings. I bought a kryptonite D lock with cable, and a heavy duty cable coil lock.

I leave my dirt cheap commuter at the station locked up with the d-lock and combined cable. The locks cost as much as the bike, so far so good, but it is a really naff bike.

I carry the cable lock in my pannier when on the good bike, but this is only for emergency. At work the bike sits in an internal courtyard and at home is locked in the garage. Having spent time and money getting it set up I just can't bear the thought of it getting stolen.

A big recommendation is that you make your bike look really rubbish, I just can't bring myself to do that.

I had a bike stolen in Portsmouth when I lived there!

You MUST get a D-lock - others types are just not strong enough and can nearly always be cut with decent bolt croppers.

Has your old lock got a cylinder style lock/key thing - ie. has the key got a circular bit on the end - if so these are rubbish and can easily be picked. You see very few, if any new locks like this now.

I have a Kryptonite New York - it's very strong (one of the strongest available), but is rather heavy to carry about - not too bad if you attach it to the bike, but not so good in a bag. Anyway, that's my recommendation. If you shop about on-line you can get them for £50, otherwise I think the RRP is about £75-£80.

yeah kryptonite mini evolution is supposed to be good at reasonably priced at around £35 - not so easy to lock a wheel and frame to something though - would need an additional cable to save the wheels!

I have a trelock bs510 £30 from decathlon - its sold secure silver and has a good review on bike radar.
http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/bs-510-300-17249424/

Also worth a look are onguard locks - they appear to be the same as magnum and raleigh? onguard are on amazon £19 (the bike bracket is poor though - see amazon.com reviews from states)

theres this on atc - onguard brute £25

you might also want to get an extension cable to lock the front wheel etc - £7 decathlon and £5 amazon for onguard. some people advise taking a chain and a d lock as a thief would need to be very well equipped -however thats alot to carry around!

see this for advice on locking up your bike:

if you want to spend a bit more then the abus suggested above is excellent

NB: kryptonite stuff has shot up in price recently

go to a locksmith or motorbike shop and get two bloody great chains and secure locks for less than one not so bloody great cycle specific lock

leave one at either end of your journey

save money, be secure, no heavy lock to carry

I use a Magnum Gold D-lock and an Onguard beast chain - that weighs 10lbs, and is left on the bike rack...only ever carried it once in the rucksack...FFS....

Out on sites it's the Magnum, plus an ABUS BORDO - these are a great portable lock with good security (as a second lock).

Those New Yorkers are beasts though - had a nosey at one the other day...crikey...

Have a look at these guys:

http://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/

They do a Series 3 chain at 0.7m long now with various padlock options - not light but perfect for in the garage or leaving at work etc. I've used the Series IV on my motorbikes with a ground anchor for years and its a really impressive piece of kit.
