Is there any way I can use google or an alternative website to work out the route from A to B for me and then download the TCX file to my Garmin unit?

There are absolutely tons of sites that can do this and everyone will recommend their favourites. Ride With GPS is good IMO.

I also use www.gpxeditor.co.uk which is a bit quirky but has the advantage of showing OS maps, Google Maps and OSM maps as you choose.

If I'm not mistaking, the sites suggested are good for the user plotting the course.... I'm after a site where I enter both starting and ending points and the site works out the route for me.

I use Plotaroute as well.

They are adding to it all the time.

What I like most about it is that you do not have to leave the screen to look at Streetview so you can actually see the road where you are plotting to ride.

Yeah that's really useful, I use to check whether I'm actually still on a road or have wandered onto a Bridleway or such ..... OK if I'm going out on the MTB but not on the road bike. I also like that it has good facilities for auto routing using different parameters, then for modifying to personal taste if required.

The sites mentioned all do exactly that.

They all rely on you entering a series of points for your course, and the program fills in the intermediate route. So if you enter only two points - start and end, the site will work out the route between them. It will probably be a crap route, which is why most people also enter intermediate points.

I think google maps seems to be the best. I entered Bournemouth and Plymouth and it offered me if I wanted "Via National Cycle route 2" which is just fine. The others I have to do this manually.

RidewithGPS can plot a route for you. Click on your start point, ensure you have optimise for cycling selected, and then in the Jump to a Location box, enter your destination and click on Go. A prompt then asks if you want to route to that location, click Yes, and it then shows the route.

Another vote for ridewithgps here. In particular the OSM cycle map view is great for my area. I find it much more detailed and informative than any of the other map skins.
