This is a shared bike scheme in Madrid. The bikes are electric assist types. Initially I was disappointed that the scheme precludes tourists but I can now see why that could be. In essence the city is trying to reduce traffic. Getting commuters and workers to use bikes helps. Allowing tourists to use them would reduce the number available without yielding any reduction in traffic. Indeed if the locals could not use the bikes, there would be more car journeys.

Good to see a shared scheme apparently working well.

The tourists can definitely use the Boris Bikes, I have seen some crazy death wish weave-right-across-the-road-whilst-chatting-to-your-fellow-tourists cycling off them many many times! Thank god they have the average speed of a sofa.

I think the Madrid scheme makes a lot of sense, though weird to only have electric assist bikes!
