That's £650 per year for a frequent user (12 months @ £50 + £50 annual membership). So how long, at that rate, would it take to buy a Brompton that you can take on the trains and use from door to door?

Great idea. Barmy execution - £650 and end up with thin air or a similar amount on bike to work and have a nice shiny bike to show for it.

How does that cost fit with the 'age of austerity'? People in those countries which take cycling seriously must think we are out of our minds. I understand it will be exciting though:

"an exciting new initiative that will provide travellers with a new and exciting means by which to travel around Manchester"

I wait for the decision in 12 months to shut it down because it's losing millions of quid... yet another brilliantly stupid idea by polititans who have no idea what they're doing.
Especially when compared with the prices a bunch of feckless drunken layabout students can come up with - here http://www.mmunion.co.uk/pageassets/icycle/iCyclePrices16Feb12.pdf

It'd be interesting to know how much the private sector companies are making off this scheme.

I see they have come up with £40 a month, which isn't that much less than the Brompton scheme. Maybe there are some hidden costs that we are just not appreciating.
