At least this proposal would be a start to getting idiot cyclists to ride safer

What does everyone else think?

I think it's stupid and wouldn't do us any favours. Why not fine people who are"idiot cyclists" the cost of the course...two birds, one stone.

So driving licences for riding a bike - no thank you!! Would this mean that children would not be allowed to cycle. how do they get experience to pass the cycle test. Who would pay for the driving licences - photos required etc etc?

In sum, I think this is a barking idea.

read the original post. no mention of driving licenses. it is only for idiots caught doing stupid things.

the government will not fine idiot cyclists the cost of the course, they would not pay, just like they won't make helmets compulsory, it would stop people from cycling and reduce numbers, precisely what they don't want.

the children angle is a good point and would need further consideration hence the debate.

would be interesting to see what posters above would propose to increase cyclists riding ability.

Without a driving licence, how do you prove a cyclist has passed a test. Licence, test certificate - same thing really as it needs controlling and monitoring.

id cards, we're getting them whether we like it or not.

any safe cyclist would never have to attend or do a test.

there's a case on one of these forums today where a bus driver killed a women in a dark unlit country lane, she was walking her bike no lights, reflectors or anything to light her up. bus driver did not see her. not his fault.

as a society why are we not doing anything about cyclists like this?

do we just leave them to it as the system is at present.

What am I if I push a trolley? Because you're not a 'cyclist' if your pushing your bike, you're a pedestrian at that point in time...therefore we'd need a licence to walk? Or idiot walkers have to do additional training?

Presumably if we're getting ID cards against our will, people could be forced to attend and pay for said cycle training course? I'd rather 'idiot cyclists' were put off than continue cycling - if you're going to use the compulsory helmet debate.

I don't particularly have a problem with offer cycle training to those who are less able to cycle safely but I do have a problem with how you're wanting to pay for it. You'd end up with 25 million bad attitudes towards cycling if you're not careful.

Define a safe cyclist? I presume you are excluding yourself from this training as you are undoubtedly deemed safe. All cyclists on MTB, wearing hoodies, with Ipods?

I still think it is Barking. Indeed, it is probably more like Dagenham (a few stops past Barking).

Well, I went to look at the first post but looks like the OPs removed it....I think a safe cyclist is someone who stops at red lights and follows the highway code to the letter, etc.

and your view if it had been a pedestrian?

it would have still happened - this was a pedestrian pushing a bike.
