Hello all, new to the forum :tongue:

I am looking for a bike under £300 that will be used for commuting to work but also be able to go on country rides on gravel paths etc

I used to ride Kona's so like a good sturdy but light frame.

Is there any bikes people can recommend?

I am currently looking at the following;

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/scott/sportster-p5-2008-hybrid-bike-ec001320

http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/product/16447/Giant_Escape_R2_Bike_2008

I prefer the Giant but worried about the size of the tyres for more country/gravel paths, or will this cope fine?

Any help is appreciated

The Scott has front suspension whereas the Giant doesn't. Also the Giant has front/rear disc brakes, the scott has V brakes.

Personally I don't like/need suspension so I recently bought a Felt QX75 for £350, there are cheaper versions of the bike too: http://www.evanscycles.com/categori...d=Felt&price_from=&price_to=&price=&x=29&y=16

The tyres on it are good enough for going on gravel paths etc.

i bought a trek 7.1 (now the 7100) a few years ago and it's been a good bike. I've recently had to change the rear wheel because of broken spokes and broken axles but that's because i am currently far too heavy for my height :tongue:

For your use you really don't need suspension. It's more expense, weight and poor handling than it's worth.

hmm really. I used to have aKona that had Project 2 forks and never had problems with rigid bikes so might go for the Giant.

Tyres and rims still look very thin for more grvale lane riding but guess I will believe it when I see it :wacko:

There are other shops around that I can get the Giant one from so think delievery times wont be a problem, thanks for the heads up though.

I am going to pop to Bikelab in Poole this weekend to see what they recommend.
