Bike Carrier

What sort of price should I be expecting to pay for a tailgate mounted bike rack?

Don't want to spend too much but want something well made and secure. Will generally hold one carbon bike and occasionally a couple of Ali mountain/hybrids.

The car is a 5 door A3.

Saris bones twin bike carrier about £110. if you have a tow bar, then go for a Thule 2 bike carrier at about £150.

I'm not sure I fully trust the tailgate mounted ones, the towball ones are solid.

Our first carrier was the Halfords High Mount (still in loft), did the trick but took ages to set up especially if you are particular like my John and don't want the bikes to rub together. Pipe lagging of various dimensions sorted that, but again took time. We then decided to invest in the Thule tow bar carrier and its amazing. Less than 3 minutes and the bikes are mounted and because of positioning very little drag.

Honest if cycling is going to be a life time passion it's well worth the investment.

I'll have a look into fitting a tow bar but I think it'll be cost prohibitive :-/
