Has anyone experienced having their bike stolen while out on it, only while riding through Rugby recently I had a youth come up fast behind me on a mountain bike persuading me to stop, i was not sure of his intentions, but decided to put my foot down and left him behind shouting for me to , wait a second mate !!,, after this I pondered on what I should of done if he had caught up, maybe shoved my cycle pump up his a**e, any other suggestions??

Better off not stopping - I know I wouldn't, unless it was another 'proper' cyclist, not some yoof !

Generally it's kids stealing bikes from other kids, or using the bike as getaway vehicle after mugging old ladies.
Not many scrotes will try and rob a person who is likley to fight back unless they are in a gang.

I know of two people here in York who have had their bike forcefully taken off them by mindless thugs. The bikes were taken off lady's.

not necessary. About a month ago I was getting beeped and shoued at by a moped rider. When he caught up he told me one of my panniers had dropped off and I never even noticed.

Had no panniers on my bike, but he was determined and on his own, perhaps he was an avid cycle spotter, and he needed mine for his collection, as train spotters need certain locos, do cycle spotters exist i wonder ??

I was flying down hill once doing about 38mph when a guy pulled along side and started hollering somethin, I thought oh no here we go, when I eventually stopped at the lights he came along side and said (in thick Jamaican accent) I had dropped my scarf away back!

So you can never tell can you?

Last Friday on my commute home I had some kids/teenagers in Lewisham (about 5 or 6 of them).. try to surround me, with one of them saying 'Get His Bike'... they obviously didn't think that a geeky looking cyclist like myself could leave them for dust.

Friend of a friend was pushed off his bike by a gang and kicked into unconsciousness (they took his mobile phone, wallet and bike) - happened in Chorlton in broad daylight.

On the Critical Mass ride i did, we went to the top of a multi story can park. I was right at the back, and went to the other side, only when i got to the ramp that i saw 4 people standing at the top of the stiars smoking. One said to another about getting my bike, but i was off down the ramp before any of them could move, and with someone else going down the other and a big group of cyclists on the next level down, it wouldnt of been too good if they did try.
Never had someone on a bike try and get me to stop and steal my bike though. If they did try i would be off very fast, thats if they could get near in the first place.

Apart from the time I was fixing a puncture on the off-road path earlier this year and overheard the two junkies who'd come and stood next to me say, "Will I hit him with the pipe ?" and "Nah, we'll just f***'in jump 'im !", I've not had anyone (touch wood) try and mug me for my bike.

TBH, the neds around here are more impressed by flashy mountain bikes, and tend to target those in thefts. After the stoned ned on my doorstep told me I needed to get suspension fitted to my bike to make it decent, I know that he's unlikely to want to pinch mine !!

fact is it really isn't worth taking the risk these days. i'm horrified at some of the stories I'm hearing here. Its bad enough we nearly get knocked off our bikes every day by mad motorists.!now we got to have eyes in the back of our heads looking for bike muggers.
I'm off to Amazon for some pepper spray;)
