I've been using the road bike all year since I bought it in March, but I very nearly got caught out on Friday when there was a dusting of snow. I've taken the warning though, and today the thicker tyred, Dawes hybrid has been brought out of retirement. She's only had occasional slow weekend rides with the kids this year, so I've given her the once over, and now I've adjusted the gears and brakes, cleaned, oiled, and lubed her, swapped over the panniers and lights, and now she's ready for the Winter rides.
I suppose I could ride the road bike all year round, but the tyres are too skinny, and I'd rather have an 'off' (as I most likely will at some point this Winter) on the Hybrid as she's a lot tougher. Is anyone else still using the road bike?

Still basking in sunshine in Suffolk!

I have swapped to the Winter bike though: I bought an old Pug of Ebay for £60 and spent £100 on new cables, tyres & tubes etc.

It has mudguards, lower gearing, flat pedals and reflectors. Also, I've put 28mm tyres on rather than 23mm.

Even so, I hope I don't drop it...

Only have a hybrid, got offer to lend my dads 10 year old full sus shogun , weighs more than a tank plus needs gears sorted and brakes etc... out of the 10 year, its only been out no more than 10 times (no joke). Prob my only option

I know even as I write it, I'm cursing myself now, but here goes...

Hopefully, I won't have any snow/ice tomorrow, as the MTB is in a horrendous condition after a very wet, muddy Cannock Chase today. Unfortunately didn't have time to immediately clean it on return, so will have to do it after work tomorrow.

I was at Cannock yesterday too. Thoroughly miserable about half way into it. Nothing worse than flying over the bumps with glasses fogged to buggery and then landing into a Olympic length sized puddles!!

But on topic, last year I used my racer through the winter, and probably was a little lucky not slipping in the occasional patches of ice, especially having seen someone do just that. This year I might get use my current mountain bike for those nasty days. Though always wonder what impact it has on the commute time.

I've found no difference between using my MTB and my road bike on icy roads / paths. Both slide around just as much when I'm riding on ice. Mind you, the MTB can probably withstand more of a battering when it hits the deck compared to the roadie.... ^_^

Icy on Saturday morning around here, colleague of mine had an off on his racer, I just felt the rear wheel lose a bit of traction a couple of times.
Hybrid has it's studs on ready but weather has warmed a touch now, so it can stand down for a few more days :cold:

Bit icy around here this morning when I went to work (tad surprised). But managed alright on the 23c tyres, going back home into a hailstorm, into the wind, not good on the face.

Main reason the mountain bike will come out is it doesn't matter that much if it gets damaged from an off.

I've packed in the racer in favour of cyclocross bike for the winter, even so I still managed to go down today on the slippery roads (with 35c knobby tyres on and all)
