Yep. Only in America:

...Life as greater Los Angeles knows it is ending this weekend, courtesy of a full closure of one of its central arteries, the 405.
(...)
That's where I first encountered Jet Blue's admittedly shrewd marketing ploy to ferry passengers from Burbank to Long Beach—"over the 405"—for $4. (I'm still not sure if that fare includes various taxes and fees—or if there's time for a drinks service.) When I learned the actual distance Jet Blue's planes will fly—30-odd miles—I wondered if there might be a faster (and even cheaper) way. Jet Blue had posted a flight time of 20 minutes. But what happens when you factor in the time to and from the airport on both ends, the walk to the check-in and then the unpredictable security lines, the equally capricious runway departure and arrival queues, and any other unforeseen delays? That cross-town trip was theoretically adding up to a substantial schlep.
(...)
And so tomorrow (NB actually today, possibly ongoing as we speak given the time difference?), after you've spent the morning watching the Tour de France riders begin a climb through the Pyrenees, you can follow along, via Bike Commute News and the #flightvsbike hashtag, as a group of cyclists takes on an Airbus A320 (or Embraer 190) in a city convulsed by gridlock. In part two of this column, I'll be toasting the winners and providing some post-race commentary.

edited: Race is over, no spoilers here from me, go to twitter.com and search on the above hashtag for results (including other groups that took the subway and one person who rollerbladed, apparently.

Depending on the fitness of the cyclists and if the potential stops they have to make is low. Then it's possible.

Btw you might as well as post the results. It won't make any difference To the thras but will save people a lot of time.

Results:
1. Bike
2. Walk/mass transit
3. Rollerblades
4. Plane

Bikes took 1.5 hours, aircraft 2 hours 54 minutes (including taxi to/from and transit through the airport).
Seems the plane was delayed 10 minutes at takeoff, with flight time of 12 minutes. They were predicting 45 minutes gate to gate for the flight, obviously they didn't meet that target! The cyclists had an hour headstart due to the time it takes to get to/transit through Burbank airport, but as you can see, even if they'd started the 'plane' team at the airport the bike would still have won.

It would save me having to create a Twitter account and learning how to use it !
TBH, you could enter the '#flightvsbike' in the search box that appears on the twitter.com website and it would take you to all the most recent tweets containing that 'tag'.

(disclaimer: I don't usually 'do' twitter meself)

1:34 for a 30 mile cycle journey through a dense urban area with traffic lights, junctions, congestion etc is incredibly fast. The last 30 mile journey I made took me about 1:50 and that was 99% rural on country lanes with a net descent.

Unless the bike journey was considerably shorter than 30 miles.

I think it was longer than 30 miles, but they used some car-free trails and also set their pace to time traffic lights. Or at least they claimed they'd be able to do that. Looks like they didn't even need to though!
