Some posts from today/yesterday about video & contatcting the media all merged into one thought this morning.

It's National Bike Week 2009 http://www.bikeweek.org.uk/page.php?id=7 13-21 June.

I'm guessing that it would be simple to beam live from the bike with the aid of a mobilie telephone connection, this would make a great little inset on the screen where a commuter's journey could be monitored by the nation.

This got me thinking that there might be local/national TV news interest in doing a daily commuters diary or some such thing.

Some of you that do all the head-cam stuff might interested in following this up. If not I only wasted 38 seconds

Would be reasonably cool, but streaming video is expensive through cables, never mind through mobile communications. As for bike week, it ends on my birthday so I'll be forcing my boss to supply bacon sarnies that week

The only cost I can see is the bandwidth. Windows Media Encoder is a free download and can stream pretty much anything. Mobile bandwith however, is too expensive (IMO) to be worth my while.

Depending on what stream platform you use, many are free. However, you'd need all the equipment (computer, cameras that will be able to stream, etc). And yes, the cost of actually transferring the data is quite expensive. For a commerical "mobile broadband" package, the best offer is £5 for a Gb and that's if your a virgin media customer. The other problem with mobile broadband is it's not always that reliable so you'd get it cutting out, and the speed it can upload probably wouldn't be nearly good enough to stream video properly.

I reckon IF the TV people were involved they'd have some magic and some money to make it happen...

Yep, I'm sure they'd already have stuff for it. Might be easier to record the ride, then play it on tvs the day after mind.

Exactly Thomas.

Was suprises (and annoys) me is, most phones, with a camera (apart from the really old ones) are capable of this task: Capturing audio and video, compressing and steaming wirelessly to a server, where it can be furhter processed and streamed to multiple users. However, its just the software does not exist (or is not easily available) for you to be able to do it.

Anyone here any good at coding nokia apps? ;)

We are up for doing a fair bit of stuff this year in Manchester, but it's all voluntary from the 'cyclists' and some very limited funding from public bodies..... - a few of the bike shops (let's just say the little folk - the big shops don't bother.....)

TBH it was a good success last year, has rolled on, and we have a regular monthly bike to work run (not a critical mass as that's a bit anarchistic...) and it works...... 4-5 organisations getting together to help new commuters to get into the city - and even us hard core main road blasters learn new routes...... although nice and traffic free...but slow...., but it can be done.....
