Thanks for the reassurance - will bodge something to try to make sure that the bottle doesn't move. I have seen a few online pics, including yours, where things seemed pretty close.

could only get the bottle in or out if the wheel was rotated... the clip was to prevent anything happening if it did jump - rather not loose the fuel, but nothing never did. Some velcro carefully placed should be fine (wrapped around and pulled tight...)

Gap between bottle and mudguard is about 2cm. Will velcro as you suggest.
The gear cables do in some positions run along/touch the cage but gear changing (haven't ridden it yet) doesn't seem to be affected. Am assuming that it won't fray the cables - well not until they would need changing anyway in normal service.

I think a 2cm gap should be fine. that is about twice what I had!
gear cables? interesting one. can't help on that front to be honest, but getting them with some sheilding at next service might be useful if only for the section along there that is affected.
