On my last ride I p*nct*red, fitted a new tube and carried on. All seemingly as it should be. Went to get bike out of garage today - flat tyre. (Yes I had checked for the reason for the first p*nct*re and sorted). So - change tyre (new) and tube. Pump up. 5 mins and bang ;) Look for another spare tyre. Fresh out so decide to use bike #2. Bottom bracket mega loose (both sides ). Mess about but no joy - threads in frame boogered I think. So pinch tyre and tube from front wheel and fit to bike #1. Bike #1, however, has a clonk from the freewheel. I think pawls are about to give up the ghost. But bike #1 cannot take back wheel from bike #2 (differing drop out spacings). And I have 3 tubes still to repair.

Is it April 1st? Or has the spaghetti monster withdrawn his caring side?

pawls? what are these mystical things?

Err - they is the things wot engage with the ratchet in a freewheel. There be a spring behind the pawl which returns the pawl into the tooth of the ratchet so as it engages for pedalling. Cunning little devils really. When they wear out, get stuck or the spring breaks they leaves you with a freewheel in both directions. Which, with minimal casual thought, means you're stuffed

In the olden days old timers (before my time) used to carry spare spring wire and tools to dismantle a freewheel by the road side. These were the good old olden days when you couldn't rely on your freewheel to survive too many rides. You young uns don't know you is born

I'm now looking for another frame. I needs mudguards/700c's and a little bit of sportyness and not toooo money sapping. Any thoughts out there?
