Takes me back. Milometers that fitted to your wheel nut, or if you were loaded, the speedo with the wheel that rubbed on your tyre.

And what about wooden lolly sticks poked through the spare bit of space in the rear brake arm where the brake block goes? Ratatatatatatatat ...

fitted (club penguin) cards to the chainstays of the two lads' bikes to make them sound like motorbikes....
When I was that age it was also cool to remove mudguards (heavy, steel - we're talking 1960). I unbolted mine but had to leave the stays on because the eyebolts at the front hub were seized. Then off down the road at full pelt! 200 yards later the stay slipped slowly towards the tarmac, so Master Impatient grabbed it between metal and tyre, where there isn't really room, and ....

... ran home howling and wailing, with a pocketfull of fingers for my Mum to sew back on.

I remember being impressed seeing the bread bag thingies on a bike and decided to do the same to mine.... but only having about three or four, it didn't really work.

as for the card and peg on the chain-stay giving the essential motorbike sound... the Grifter had one built in if you folded the plastic end of the mudguard under so it rubbed against the tyre.

the boys' pal had found a method whereby a squashed water bottle (as in evian etc., not a bidon) is wedged between back brake and rear wheel.

i told ours not to do that, is it stopped the rear brake from working properly…
