BB5 brakes are rubbish compared to the TRPs I'm used to. It seems impossible to set them up to give good braking response without them pulling all the way back to the handlebars. I happened on this just recently so am going to give it a go when I get some tim

I bought a used Cannondale CX and was not impressed with the disc brakes, fitting some linear cables transformed them into decent stoppers.

@EasyPeez - Go for the HyRds! I've been using them on my equilibrium disk 20 for a few months now and they are worlds apart from the Shimano 105 disks I had on my Focus CX - and haven't required a jot of adjustment!
Interesting you swapped your Mares for an Eq20 - I nearly bought a Focus myself at the start of the year as my first road/commute bike but when for an Equilibirum10 in the end and am delighted with it. How are you finding your Genesis, in general and in comparison with the Focus?
Mine, being the 10 rather than the 20, comes with the TRP Spyre brakes and I'm well happy with their performance and ease of adjustment. I'm thinking the HyRds can only be the same and better, hence why I'm eyeing them up for the Boardman.

the mudguards very dependant on tyres fitted. Some fit 23C tyres and therefore slimmer guards. Mine is fitted with 32C and no guards as yet, I have a different wet weather bike. Front guards can be fitted using these

I've put 35mm Marathon Deluxe on mine, so not sure if I'll get guards to fit around those? The cage strips look good. Was thinking rubber P clips but maybe the cage strips are better. Do they come off again when required rather than need snipping like cable ties? Cheers

Had the Genesis since the beginning of September so I think I can give a bit of a better opinion of it now. By comparison, I felt like I was fighting the Focus all the time (even with comparable tyres) The genesis feels way smoother and all round just a little higher quality. The ability to fit full mudguards is a bonus as well.

Can't say enough good things about the brakes. Enough modulation to stop me in a very reasonable distance even with a particularly lardy arse and 20kgs worth of panniers on board - using just the rear! The front only really gets used in panic mode!

Sounds good. Not quite good enough to warrant a change of avatar just yet though? Still on the probationary period? :okay:

Nice tyre, I have these. They grip for England.

Are you referring to the M Deluxes? If so I got them from Rose based on your recommendation in this thread -

I only fitted them yesterday. They went on a treat. Very impressed with rolling resistance compared to knobblies. Here's hoping they keep me gripped and p*******e-free through winter! Thanks for the recommendation.

@EezyPeez

Ah yes - I'd forgotten about that!

I'm not far off of 200lb and run them at 6 bar rear and 5.5 bar front. Schwalbe have a pressure vs rider weight calculation on their website.

Yes, they go on very easy.

They grip like crazy on rough tarmac roads and give me near MTB tyre confidence that they will hang on for grim death.

The inverted tread = really good roll-ability!

Done several thousand miles on mine with no punctures (even over thorny cuttings generated by the local farmers every Sept/Oct).

Enjoy them and stay safe!

I really do not like the Boardman I have the original, it feels heavy, sluggish and just a bit dull to ride. Not sure if its me comparing it all the time to a superlight bike, or if its the CX geometry or if its just me and the bike do not fit. The one thing it taught me is to never buy a bike again that I cant test ride. Probably great on the grass and mud but I bought it to commute on.

I might be wrong but I think a lot of this is down to the wheelset. I had both wheels off my steel Genesis (claimed bike weight circa 10.5kg) and likewise off my Boardman (claimed bike weight 10.34kg) earlier this week, as I was fitting new tyres to both. When lifting the wheel-less frames, one in each hand, the Boardman felt to be the lighter frame, not by loads, but by a noticeable amount. When lifting a wheel from each bike, one in each hand, the Mavics from the CX felt considerably heavier than the Fulcrums from my roadie - and that's bearing in mind that the Fulcrums in question are at the chunky, durable end of the road wheel spectrum themselves.
The Genesis, despite being a heavier bike than the Boardman, provides a great, stiff, repsonsive ride, and can really fly when pushed. I manage to keep up with some pretty good cyclists riding Giant Aeros and high-end Wiliers on the Genesis of a weekend. I'd never keep up on the Boardman.
Based on this I'm convinced that the Boardman would roll and corner much better on the road with a different set of wheels on it. So £200 on new wheels could transform it. There again it sounds like you'd prefer to put the £200 in question and whatever you could sell the Boardman for towards a new bike.
