Boardwalk Empire is very, very good.

Likewise The Wire but you do have to sort of tune yourself into the accent.

Mad Men is excellent, as is West Wing.

I remembered this old thread and am requesting an update ... :okay:

I bought my stepdaughter the boxed set of The Sopranos on Blu-ray last Christmas and we will have got to the end of that just in time for a new boxed set this Christmas. Boardwalk Empire has made the shortlist. I just wondered what the final verdict was from the CycleChat viewing panel ...?

If it isn't Boardwalk Empire then I think I might go for The Shield but am put off the boxed set on Amazon because it is supposed to be an over-edited version. There is an unbutchered US version available but I am reluctant to import from the USA in case of import duties, defects, or compatibility problems.

Another possibility is The Wire although we both struggled to get on with Season 1. (I found the accents and fast dialogue hard to follow but I was drinking a lot of beer in those days so being semi-sloshed was probably why I couldn't make out half of what was being said!)

I watched Boardwalk Empire earlier this year, and it is well worth getting into, really enjoyed it. I would say go for it.

You are certainly not alone in struggling with the accents in The Wire, with or without beer, many people have said the same. Some have said they resorted to subtitles because of it, despite that, it was another tremendous TV show IMHO. I intend to watch The Wire again soon but will read the book at the same time as doing so. I got it from Amazon a while back.

It would be interesting to know who people's favourite character is in The Wire; mine is Omar, and the actor who plays him also plays a great role in Boardwalk Empire as Chalky White.

My order of preference:

(1) Sopranos - just fantastic, I've watched the lot twice.

(2) The Shield - again just fantastic, thinking of watching this again.

(3) Boardwalk Empire - Really enjoyed it, probably wouldn't watch it again

(4) The Wire - Got through it, first couple of seasons were okay, but the rest I thought were pretty rubbish.

Therefore in my opinion get The Shield.
