yep when we were kids it was something that was seen on most open pieces of land, common ground etc.
A couple of weeks before bonfire night they would start to be built and in those two weeks they would grow to be huge.
They were a sort of house clearance and general crap bonfire.
And you're right, we just don't see that anymore.
But it's a good thing. People are so dim these days that it would be more then dangerous.

The most interesting bonfire that I ever saw was at a Le Mans 24 hr motorcycle race in the eighties. It used a giant earth moving vehicle tyre as the base - god knows where the spectators got it from. It had a largish platform on which four of five lunatics stood when the bonfire was lit. The last one to jump off won.
Much later on the embers were used to demonstrate macho-ness by idiots doing the long jump over them in the nude apart from footwear - at the edge rather than the diameter I hasten to add. I couldn't watch.

Pity most of them are shoot like.
There is one at my workplace on Monday, which is always fun if there is a changeable wind as everyone stands a few yards from it then when the wind changes direction they all run around to get out of the way of the smoke and embers that get blown off the top.
It is also a good way to get rid of all the used white spirit I have used for cleaning chains over the last year.

Went to 'Bonfire at the Brewery' last night - mahoosive bonny, loads of fireworks and Hook Norton beer at the bar, what more could one ask for!

Went to an excellent bonfire in the village next to us. Bonfire on village green next to the pond, fireworks set off from one of the front gardens, no hi-vis , no roped off areas, just a good proper bonfire night, then into the star n garter for a nice meal.

Absolutely awesome one at a local pub last night. £10 per family entrance, huge bonfire, and some of the best fireworks I have ever seen (display ones that lasted well over 30 minutes). Add in a load of friends/family, beers, then a walk home with the kids after stopping for takeaway pizza (like we would do after the pub on a fri/Sat night). Kids still asleep and it's nearly 9am.
Deffo going again next year.

Not Guy Fawkes related, but in Gävle in Sweden, a Christmas goat is built out of straw at the beginning of December, ready to stand tall and proud, as a Christmas decoration.
However, it has become a target for arsonsists and it is almost a competiton for those trying to torch it first.
In the 39 years since its inception, it has been burnt down 24 times. On one such occasion, the security guards given the task of 'protecting' it from vandals, went inside to have some food, only to see the goat in flames moments later.
Bookmakers have even taken bets on the longevity of the goat.
