Is anybody else finding it impossible to book a practical driving test? My daughter is desperate to take a test and is well capable of passing (IMHO) but getting a date is impossible. They release new slots at 06:00 on a Monday morning so here I am, up and at it, but the handful of slots that did show up at 06:00 disappeared faster than I could book them. I'd click on one and click 'confirm' but it would then state that the time and date were no longer available. The system shows no available slots at any nearby test centres. It is easier to get an Oasis ticket using the lottery jackpot money you won. It's a broken system.

Anecdotally I've heard that it can be very difficult.

Do check first, but my granddaughter who recently passed, said you can book a test anywhere in the country then transfer the booking to the place you want easier than attempting to get one at your local test centre.

My daughter had to wait 6 months for her driving test-manual.

I was speaking with a driving instructor at the centre whilst he and I waited for the examiners to return. He told me, many many test are booked and people dont turn up. The biggest reason, the learner can't get a car to do the test, because they can't afford a car or pay for driving instructor. He told me some stats(cant remember) and the problem is huge, very big percentage of tests are not taken.

He also told me general driving skills are shocking, with so many people freaking out at the tasks of learning. He said youngsters just don't seem able to hold a set of basic instructions in their head for more than a few minutes-he jokingly called them ticktock memories.

He was forthright about the shitty system and wasted test and levels of drivers. He told me across the board it wasnt uncommon for learners to fails more than 5 times in the practical test.

Im glad we took our time with our child. They drove well over 125 hours of driving before the test came up and passed first time.

One of the biggest problems now is the rise in booking companies that just auto block book tests. Who then charge a massive fee when they sell them on. In the same way all the other companies that do things you can easily do yourself. Like applying for a passport or a driving license.

That has been stopped according to the drive instructor I spoke to.

The system is overloaded, tests are being booked no one turns up and are not being cancelled, so there are only a few cancellations popping up for availability.

Things in Reading are pretty bad too - as of July this year there was a 6 month waiting list.

The Costa Clyde rain magnet.
My youngest isn't that bothered.
There was no reason not to go out for a drive after I passed my test. She's not that bothered at all. Maybe it will dawn on her the freedom it gives eventually

Or maybe it HAS dawned on the current generation that it doesn't really give them much freedom at all. Better to be more careful about where they live, rather than get sucked into NEEDING a car (and I count myself among those mugs) and all the expense it involves. How much of my income over the years has been spent on initial purchase of cars, then the insurance, servicing (even although I can manage most of that myself once the car is out of warranty), VED, fuel, and most of all - depreciation. All for what end result? So that I can go out on the road and get stressed at the volume of traffic, sharing the roads with incompetent, selfish, entitled nobbers; deal with constant roadworks and other delays. If I was young, I think I would have a long hard think before bothering to learn to drive and getting conned into car ownership. Give it a few years and it will probably all be automated anyway, with self driving cars that you summon on an app when required.

We did this for my daughter who lives in south London. Booked a test in Scotland just to get on the system via the crazy 6am booking system.
A local cancellation then came up 2 days before Christmas. The instructor couldn’t make the date so my daughter had to take the test in our car.
It’s all very stressful and unsatisfactory.
No one seems to care.
