Bost bike!

Hi all,

Was riding home from work this evening when my pedals locked, looked back and saw that my rear derailleur had snapped off.

On further inspection it appears the part of the frame that the derailleur was attached to has snapped.

I've only had the bike since 7th August 2012 from Evans. I just wandered if anyone can tell me where I stand with regards to a warranty claim?

In my opinion this is a manufacturers fault but would appreciate some opinions.

Please see pics

Thank you

Its the mech hanger they are designed to burst and be replaceable rather than writing off your frame, its comparatively cheap and easy to replace. I wouldn't have expected it to fail so early and if Evans care about their reputation, they'll replace it FOC after all you are still within 1 year. I've never dealt with Evans though.

If all else fails play the 'Under the Sales of Goods Act 1979 a product must be fit for purpose, this product has failed outside of what would be classed as normal wear and tear' card.

I recently had to deal with this one on my own. It is very easy to repair, the hard part is identifying the correct hanger. I had to contact the bike manufacturer then order the part at LBS.

Keep a careful eye on hanger alignment when you get the bike back, the mech arm should be parallel to the "cogs" on the cassette.

I've been thinking about it and as I've only had the bike five months with this happening I was hoping they would let me exchange the bike for a different model as it doesn't seem fit for purpose. Any ideas whther this would be possible?

They're not going to give you a relacement bike because the 'replacable' mech hanger is broken. You can by all means ask but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Why do you want to change it for a different model?

Mainly because it puts me off the bike that this can happen so soon, i think it will always be in the back of my mind it will happen again and also because it has damaged the paintwork on the chain stays and looks a mess

Mech hangers (aka dropouts) are specifically designed to fracture if the rear mech gets a knock. A broken one just shows that the bike was working properly. I would guess that it is extremely unlikely for the hanger to break spontaneously, but I could be wrong.

What bike is it?

Legal wise they will have to repair the bike, because it should be repairable they have no obligation to swap it or refund it unless they have some sort of satisfaction guarantee, but I can't believe they will have such a thing over 5 months.
