I bottled out of the commute today.

Why? well 5 years ago today I was in an accident on the way home and ended up being off work nearly 3 months.

Last year was 1st time I had cycled on 5th november since then. Sadly there was a cycling fatality that day, at exactly the same spot I had my accident.

I'm a wimp and need to MTFU

I am gutted I bottled it. I missed cycling in to work

Whatever you need, though, eh? Don't be so hard on yourself. Make it a positive instead if you can - 5 November comes round and it's the anniversary of your survival. So you take a day off commuting and celebrate in some other way the joy of being alive. Buy yourself a present or have something particularly nice for your dins. Meet a chum and drink a toast to yourself. Hell, I'll do that for you:

It's not bottling. This stuff can really mess your head up - I got knocked off a couple of years back, and although it was only an overnight stay in hospital and a few days off work, I had a right old time coping with it.

Don't do that MTFU nonsense, just ride when you feel ready for it. It's not a competition.

As others have said, there's nothing you need to 'man up' to.
You got back on the bike and that's the main thing. Maybe one day you'll manage it but in the meantime don't beat yourself up about it
:hugs:

How did you find it getting back on the bike after the accident? I have been off the bike nearly 4 months now. I want to get on my bike and ride, but as I still dont have union of the bones in my neck I am not allowed to ride on the road, it looks I will not be going back to work for 6-9 months after the accident. The longer it goes on, the more I am getting worried abour commuting again. I find that quite irrational as I have had accidents before (numerous motorcycle and cycle) and not been bothered at all. I have just started driving again and I would say I was quite a fast driver and now I am always looking for cars to pull out (not that I didnt before) to the point of slowing right down when I see a car looking to pull out.

I've not had a major accident, but I know when I've had minor ones, they have left a mark mentally, in some cases I've avoided junctions or just been very jittery when I'm there or after an incident with a white van I disliked any white white van for a while. I think it's perfectly normal and I think the fact you are back on the bike is the main thing.

Getting back on as soon as possible is good but it doesn't mean you can avoid the problem area/date/vehicle type associated with the accident.

As others have said, don't be so hard on yourself, these things can mess you about mentally, well done for getting back on after a major off.

The important bit is that you still ride. Anyone worth their salt can forgive you for avoiding riding in that situation. In my mind - riders like yourself are the ones to look up to. You've had the balls to keep at it despite the adversity.
