He would probably be useless. The problem with politics is that the objectives aren't clear - as Obama (?) recently said, "None of the decisions that I have to make have a 'yes or no' answer. Those have already been taken before the problem gets to my desk."
Ex-military leaders are classic 'plan and execute' people and they have usually been unsuccessful as politicians.
