Brake cable route

For non-aero brake levers on drop bars, do you prefer the brake cable to be routed in front of or behind the handlebar?, and why is one better?, or does it depend?

I've posted this photo before, but it shows what I was using in 1969. I'd forgotten I used to ride with the brakes the "Flemish" way round in those days.

In front is my choice: otherwise i'd've thought they'd interfere with your hands when holding the back the bars

I have cabled a couple up the " flemish" way by accident before and not noticed any difference till another person rode said bike and ointed it out to me .

It depends on the length of the stem as well some times i think

but its a great debate for sure

I always go for the best gentle 'sweep' on the cables I can get.
