Brake caliper spring failure (?)

Addendum: decided to throw caution to the wind and bend the strut.

All now perfect, braking and adjustment works

No idea how it worked so well for the last 10 years or so!

what looks like a washer inside is actually a weird bearing with *tiny* balls. And yes, they do come out and roll all over the place.
