I've been using studded tires for many years on my winter bikes but this year I got a set of chains. Our weather conditions can really change fast in the early and late winter season. This year was no different as we had some good snow around Christmas and not long after had several weeks of warmer temps and rain followed by freezing temps. Melting snow ended up creating frozen ice on the trails. Most times I would lower the studded tires to around 3 or 4 psi to gain the proper traction to handle these conditions safely at lower speeds. Doing that on a somewhat rocky trails you still risk damaging your rim, but you need the low psi, so you get full traction with the studded tires. So, I took the chains out on this ride to see how well they would handle the icy trails. I had the front tire at 15psi and the rear at 15psi. I was really impressed with the results and the longer I rode the more I began to trust the chains and the quicker I started to ride. Well, I now know what I'll be using when ice takes over the trails again.
