Ive done about 450 miles on my crosstrail now and Ive just replaced the rear pads already (v-brakes). I dont think I brake considerably more than anyone else but this seems very fast!

Is it just that out of the factory they put rubbish quality consumables on?

Ive replaced them with some nice looking chrome jobs from the LBS which have replaceable inserts. Much more power in them and they look nice.

Really depends on the terrain and how you ride. You can go through pads v quickly if you are an aggressive rider with a fair bit of downhill riding. However, there is an element of cheaper components going on bikes esp. when you can't see the name. This is why bikes have expensive rear mechs and shifters as the brand name is visible, but the cassette, chain, brake pads are often a lower spec.

Try disc brakes next time as the sintered metal pads last a very long time. My Genesis Croix de fer has done 5000+ miles and I'm on my second set of tyres and a new chain. I have new pads ready to go, but the original ones just don't seem to be wearing that fast
