Can anyone link me to some info about correct/optimum brake/wheel combo?

I've had my Dawes Horizon for about a year and the first thing I did was to swap the useless standard brakes for some KoolStop Tectonic brakes, with all three compounds. It should hardly come as a surprise that there's now very little metal left on my rims. (but bleedin 'ell did it stop quick!!)

I rather fancy some handbuilt wheels, but I don't really want to spend £300 on wheels I'll be replacing again in 12 months time! (or is that how long I should expect wheels to last?)

Depends on the mileage, and the conditions.
I've done maybe 4k miles on my commuter wheels (Fulcrum 5) with no problems.

However I'd not touch the cheapy blocks (or any of the Shimano ones) as they seem to be prone to causing rim wear.

I'd stick with Koolstop salmon or the cheaper Gooey pads from Chain reaction. Both stop very well in all conditions - I'm a fat lad in a hilly place, so this is important

They're both very soft compounds - they might not last as long as some of the harder pads, but I always figure it's cheaper to replace blocks than rims.

If your bike has the same spec as this (http://www.dawescycles.com/p-25-horizon.aspx) then what you need to bear in mind is you have hybrid wheels - i.e. road bike rims with mtb hubs. Standard road bike rear wheel or mtb wheels will not fit.

If the existing Shimano mtb hubs (seem to be these http://bike.shimano.com.br/media/te...EV-FH-RM60-8S-2391A_v1_m56577569830728363.pdf ) are still sound or serviceable then one option is to replace the rims (and perhaps the spokes preferably for double butted ones) by a good local bike shop if there is one.

Otherwise many here have recommended hand-built wheels from Spa. A set of Deore hubbed 700c rim wheels are only £150 or so. See e.g. http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b0s178p2234

Deore hubbed Chrinas from Spa would be a good choice .... and download the wheelpro book, if you feel inspired to build your own, you can take the old wheels apart and use the bits to practice with.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I was thinking of ordering some wheels from Spa, as suggested, so I'll drag another bike out of the shed for a couple of weeks while I get the money for those together.
Thanks for the brake suggestions, Kestevan - I'll look into those.
