which is he best all rounder brakes for a road bike?

i'm searching loads of diff ones, but would like to know from the people that use them?

I can only comment on my Ultegra an Veloce Skeleton brakes, they are great for stopping smooth and powerful, but I have the feeling that its more down to how you brake, if your rims are clean etc.

My bike just has cheapo Tektro calipers on it. Changing just the pads to Clarks CPS240 made a huge difference as the standard pads were shockingly bad. I was going to upgrade to 105 calipers at first but decided to try pads first. Pleased I did as I am now satisified. I only use my Secteur for commuting though even though it is pretty hilly.

I use Bontrager Speed limit, I did have 105's but they would not hold me on a 20% hill so they had to go. My LBS put me onto them, and they were selling out as fast as they got them in stock

The other big difference is, a set of pads has lasted me a whole year on the Bontrager, before a set would last about 3 months due to me having to constantly keep applying my brakes to ensure I can stop. With the Bontrager, I can race into a junction and if its all clear just keep going as braking can be left to the last moment if need be, all time saving.

They're light, powerful, and really affordable.

I've got 105 Calipers and have absolutely no complaints, despite being 15st and living in the Pennines I never have a problem stopping.

However.... the pads that come with Shimano calipers can best be described as rubbish. Junk them and put some Kool stops on and the improvement is noticeable.

This isn't quite as simple as it seems, sure pads make a difference however different leavers have different pull ratios need to match leaver & caliper as some combinations don't work well together! SRAM Red brake levers & FSA Gossamer calipers was a complete disaster, however with Shimano DA TT79 levers the FSA calipers they were great, by the same token TT79 levers were awful with the SRAM Red calipers.
