Twenty or so years ago I visited the British Engineerium aka Brighton and Hove Engineerium in Brighton and have been meaning to pay a return visit. This was frustrated by the closure of the place in 2006 and the entire contents put up for sale by auction. I was mightily upset and abandoned all notions of ever being able to see the amazing contents again.

Fast forward to tonight when I discovered that, at the last minute, literally an hour or so before the auction started, a local man bought the building and its contents, vowed to keep the collection together and re-open the place in 2013/14 after extensive refurbishment.

The museum is having an open day Oct 28th.

Travelodge booked, open day visit is a certainty with supllementary visits to Amberley Chalk Pits Museum and the Engine Shed model railway shop at Ford. It's going to be a great weekend. :hyper:

I went to the chalk pit museum when I was at school, that was a long time ago!
Never heard of the Brighton and Hove Engineerium, will certainly look out for it when I am down there visiting relatives in the future.

I have never been to the Engineerium but I met the man who ran it. I'm not sure if it's similar, but the Kew Bridge Steam Museum in west London is fantastic. Real steam, giant engines, the smell of oil, and enthusiasts tending their engines. It doesn't get much better.
