Hello fellow bristolians,

I've been off the forum for a while after finishing with Asda. Have got a temporary job near the bear pit. Question is from Bradley Stoke is there a better commute than Gloucester Rd? It's probably alright going but on the way back it's 3 miles of ascent.

3 miles of ascent is nothing - my commute home is 15 miles, 11 of them are climbing the 1500ft back home

I don't think that was really the answer she was looking for Jowwy.

Brizzles a bit like that wherever you go. Flatten it out by extending the ride up through Fishponds and Frenchay if that helps. If not, you either need to just keep plugging away at it until your fitness improves or maybe consider an e-bike ?

I can do the climb but it's not my idea of a fun commute. In fact I can climb up Park Street and Whiteladies Rd onto the downs which I class as a smidgen more enjoyable than Gloucester Rd.

I rode up Glos road on saturday from Broadmead on my PTW. I can understand why you wantto avoid it.
Best thing is to avoid Brizzle all together ;)

Problem solved: it's closed.

@Archeress. I usually go up the Gloucester road then turn onto Filton avenue, but you could go up the railway path as far as Fishponds, skirt round the Oldbury court estate, behind Frenchay hospital, cross the ring road then onto Bradley Stoke via the old Gloucester Rd. Not tried it myself though.

Ah its a diffcult one that . I go from knowle to severn beach and going down the Portway is not to bad but then you have various routes through Avonmouth and none are that great . It seems that if you get out of Bristol city centre its a bit of a mish mash as to which way to go

I lived in Horfield for about 3 months when I first moved to Brizzle back in the mid 80's. Riding up the Cheltenham Road at the weekend certainly brought back memories. I've lived in Clifton, Redlands, and Fishponds, and I do think that this part of Brizzle has got so much character...it is 2nd hand shop manna :becool:

I do that climb everyday, its my last three miles of the 17 mile into work. I would say its the best available route. Its a steady climb, alternatives are heavier climbs with some flat, I suppose its about what you prefer, steady long, or intense short. I too take Filton Ave like User482, that takes the climb you just did up Glous RD, back down, before climbing again, stick to Gloucester Road.
