Personally, I am seeing and hearing a bit too much from Sir Dave, but anyway, he reckons the UK is top dog.

He said: "By anybody's assessment, I would say we are the number one cycling nation in the world."

Being from the UK, it is great to hear - but has he actually travelled to places like Portland Oregon, or the Netherlands, where bikes really do rule.

The way I read that he's talking about our dominance at Le Tour and on the track, rather than day to day commuting, leisure cyclists and infrastructure.

Just as welll, as we're absolutely cr@p at football, cricket, rugby and tennis at the moment.
We've always been crap at football and tennis; it's not that long since we were (I have to add 'supposedly', but nevertheless) the world's #1 at cricket - and we just put the wind up the All Blacks on their home turf - does it get more uncrap than that in world rugby? (...short of beating them, obviously). I suspect we're the world's #1 at putting ourselves down.

As for Brailsford's comment, obviously he's talking about the sport issue. TBH I'd be much more interested in seeing us become 'a' cycling nation, like those on the continent, rather than one where a few people ride bikes enthusiastically, a tiny elite ride them exceptionally, and the vast bulk of the population don't ride at all.
